Before the polis
A nineteenth-century palace in the modern centre tells the story of the communities that inhabited the Locride before and around the foundation of the Greek colony.

Palazzo Teotino Nieddu del Rio belongs to the modern town. Built as a noble residence in the second half of the nineteenth century, it now houses both the municipal library and the Territorial Museum, which opened in 2018.
Once inside, however, the story takes us far beyond the foundation of the Greek colony. The collections document the indigenous communities that lived in the Locride from prehistory into the protohistoric period. This is an essential shift in perspective: the history of the territory did not begin with the arrival of Greek settlers. Locri Epizefiri emerged within a landscape that was already inhabited, understood and travelled.
On the ground floor, grave goods from cemeteries such as Canale Ianchina and Sant’Onofrio preserve objects once placed beside the dead. Their forms and materials reveal how communities represented themselves. Some date to the Iron Age. They do not speak only of death; they tell us about relationships, social roles, skills and contact with other places.
Upstairs, the display continues through historic collections and discoveries made during construction of the new state road 106. It is a vivid reminder that archaeology is not confined to remote excavations. It can reappear while the contemporary landscape is changing.
The museum completes a visit to the archaeological park by widening the frame. We look beyond the polis to its chora, the surrounding territory, and to the people who were here before it.
Before leaving, choose one small object and imagine the hand that made or used it. The distance of thousands of years becomes smaller at precisely that point: not through a date, but through a human gesture.
